W6ML - California QSO Party in Mammoth Lakes
Mono County

During the first weekend in October, since 1992, a group of several ham friends have operated in the California QSO Party (CQP) ham radio contest from Mammoth Lakes in Mono County.   Since 2004, after many years of very successful multi operator county expeditions, Jim (W6KC) has done single operator expeditions to Mono County.   A CQP county expedition is a combination planning, packing, traveling and setting up portable ham radios along with a computer network to see how many contacts can be made during the contest period.  Stations outside of California try to contact all 58 California Counties.  California stations try to contact all 50 US states and 8 Canadian sections (also for a total of 58).  Part of the fun is trying different combinations of antennas, equipment and operating techniques to see if prior years results can be improved.  The other part of the fun is doing all this activity from Mammoth Lakes in Mono County.   Mammoth is small town built around the Mammoth Mountain ski area, at about 8,000 Feet elevation on the eastern slopes of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.  To find out more of the interesting facts regarding the California QSO Party, organized by the Northern California Contest Club (NCCC), check out their Website at: www.cqp.org
